Soo Line Depot
The Soo Line Depot is a historic building that now serves as City Hall for Thief River Falls, MN. It is listed on The National Register of Historic Places. An addition was added to provide secondary egress and handicapped accessibility to the basement, first, and second floors.
The Council Room is the old baggage wing of the building. The large waiting room was preserved and accommodates the City Engineering Department. City Administration, Zoning, Building Inspection, Community Development, and Utilities are also located within the building. The project was funded through private donations, ISTEA, and a Minnesota Historical Society Grant.
“The project to restore the 1914 Soo Line Railroad Depot and convert it for use as City Hall was an extremely challenging project from its conception to completion. Using creative and innovative design and preservation techniques, Mike, Kerry and the MJBA Staff retained most of the original interior and exterior features of the Depot. They assisted our staff in administering grants, financing and construction contracts involving three levels of government to create an attractive and functional facility that should meet the needs of the City for decades into the future.”
