Hailstone Creek South Rest Area
At Hailstone Creek South a railroad theme was chosen because of its key role in the development of the West and its present day proximity to the Interstate. The building sits on implied track made of various landscaping materials. The building form and materials reflect images of the trestle bridge, a boxcar, and depot. The building’s exterior uses a native, red face-brick, and multi-level arched roof with overhangs, keying on historical boxcar and depot elements. The building is constructed of masonry bearing walls and a wood roof structure. The structure exceeds state energy requirements and is durable and low-maintenance. It is also heated and cooled with an underfloor forced-air system. The site is universally accessible.
